Dr. Sollenberger has extensive experience in teaching accounting and finance topics to credit union financial managers, staff, board members, and volunteers. These seminars can be aimed at broad audiences or molded to individual credit union situations.
He has taught an entire generation of credit union managers within the Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) Financial Management Schools – Parts I, II, and III. He has conducted computer-based team-interactive simulations. Other topics are financial ratio analysis, capital planning, design of budgeting and control systems, strategic planning processes, asset / liability management policy development, and product cost analysis. He has brought his research work into the classroom, providing a live laboratory to test theory and practicality. The CUNA programs are both person-to-person and web-based.
Ideal Capital: How to Develop a Consensus Strategic Capital Target – 1 or more sessions
Explanation and / or implementation of a process for building a strategic target consensus for an “ideal capital” position. Across credit unions or within a specific credit union. Requires involvement of a credit union’s executive management team and its board of directors.
High-Performance Evaluation: Assessment and Rankings – 2 hours, half, or full day seminars
Presentation of how to design an assessment process to determine whether a credit union is a financially high performer given its strategic financial vision, strategic approach, peer group, financial measures, and actual financial performance.
Using a K. I. S. S. Financial Model to Test Strategic Financial Goals – 2 hours to full day seminars
Using the strategic financial goals from a credit union’s strategic plan and using a basic simple Excel-based planning model, test the quantified goals over a long timeframe for calculation of integrity, plausibility, and goal compatibility. Can be designed to use actual credit union data from an individual credit union or in a broad-based seminar context.
Asset / Liability Management Simulation Case – Requires time for case explanation and two simulation runs
Generally taught in conjunction with asset / liability management presentations. A textbook credit union case with simulation software for on-line decision making in a team-based, competitive environment. Game simulation software is operated in conjunction with Olson Research Associates, Inc. staff.
Accounting and Finance for Non-Financial Managers and Volunteers – 1, 2, or 3 day seminars
Beginning with basic accounting and financial statement relationships and principles, then on to interest rates, risks versus returns, financial ratio analysis, basics of asset / liability management, and financial planning and control systems.
Financial Performance: Financial Ratio Analysis – Half, full, or 2 day seminars
Framing risk areas of asset quality, liquidity, capital adequacy, and interest rate sensitivity and returns areas of earnings and growth. Can include hands-on calculations, individualized 5300 databases, key ratio reports, and ratio interrelationships. Credit union financial history.
Budgeting and Planning and Control Systems for Credit Unions – 2 hours, half, or full day seminars
Basic to advanced budgeting topics, including purposes, links between planning and control, components of a planning and control cycle and system, and relationships among strategic planning, management control, and operational control.
